Hello,
my situation is this, i have a pc which has the "dodgy" corporate
licence install of xp pro, i think this is the serial no

55274-640-0000356-23046

A friend has a pc which has packed up on him. It was an OEM machine
with win xp pro and a system recovery disk (compaq). If i buy it off
him, can i use this to make my xp pro legit?. He has now got a new
machine with the latest version of xp on it (2003?)

Thanks

Hi

That number is the PID, used when contacting Microsoft. If you have a
'dodgy' license, you'll need an XP CD that can perform a 'Repair' install to
change the existing 25 Alpanumeric Product Code.

A Compaq Recovery CD will only work on the specific
Compaq computer it came with. It cannot be used to
install Windows XP on any other computer.

You receive a "The product key used to install Windows is invalid" error message:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

"The product key used to install Windows is invalid"

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

No. The WinXP OEM license that came with your friend's Compaq
cannot be transferred to any other computer. It lives and dies with
the first computer on which it was installed. Also, it would work
from a technical stand-point, as Compaq uses BIOS-locking to ensure
that the OEM licenses they sell cannot be installed on any other
computers.

If you really want to "go legit," you'll have to do it the
old-fashioned way: buy a legitimate license.
