Left side tool bar

How do I add a tool bar the left side?

I can create a desk top folder and drag it to the left side to create the
tool bar but the folder stays on my desk top. When I delete it the items in
the new toolbar are gone.

How can I hide the folder or delete it from view and still have the left
side toolbar? Or is there a much better way?

Thanks in advance.

Go ahead and create a temporary toolbar "shell" in the same fashion that
you are doing now (create a new folder on the desktop and drag it where
you want it).

Then right click on the New Folder toolbar you just created, go to
"Toolbars" in the menu and select "New Toolbar..."

You will then be prompted to create/pick a "permanent" folder from your
hard drive where you will store the actual applications/shortcuts that
you would like displayed on the toolbar.

Once you have created the new toolbar-in-a-toolbar, you can deselect
the original temporary folder toolbar and delete it from your desktop,
leaving the "real" toolbar docked where you wanted it.

PS - note that if you ever close this toolbar, you will have to repeat
these steps to get it back.
