Left mouse stopped working

I have a very strange problem on a windows xp home system. I cannot open a
program from any desktop shortcut with the left mouse button, but if I right
click and click open it works. Same goes for all icons in control panel.
I've tried different mice and different drivers as well as switching to a
usb mouse, all to no avail. If I go through the start button and select from
the start menu or program list, no problem. Has anyone ever experienced
anything like this. Thanks in advance for your help...Ed

Go to Control Panel, click on Mouse, and see how the mouse buttons are
assigned. You can change functions of the buttons there.
