Layout Tables creating extra cells

Hello,
Worked until 6:00a.m. yesterday morning implementing a layout using layout
tables and it worked and was fine when I finally went to bed. Open it up
today and Frontpage has created some weird narrow cells and short cells.
Where I had 9 rows and 2 columns in a certain table when I went to bed, I now
have 16 rows and 3 columns-- and won't let me make it 2!! When I try to fix
it by deleting the weird little cells, it just screws up the table even more.

This also happened to me in a simpler but equally catastrophic way when I
tried to do the layout using regular tables (silly me; I thought you could
use Frontpage like one would use Word!!

I got all the way to the end, and then FrontPage created this large square
void in the middle of my layout. I spent 2 days trying to get rid of it, and
was unsuccessful, so started "learning" about layout tables and thought those
would be my salvation. At 6:00 a.m. yesterday, it appeared as though they had
been. Now, it's a mess again.

I've looked at some of the other posts and I am in fact using what's
considered to be a good image editor-- Photoshop Elements 3.0, BUT I am a
FrontPage newbie (who has been using PCs since 1984 and MS Word since 1989),
AND I did do the layout apparently in pixels instead of percentages, AND I do
have tables within tables-- in fact, the one table that's causing the
headaches and apparently has a mind of its own is a table within a table.

If this kind of stuff was happening in ohter software products I use, I'd
say it was buggy, but I don't see many posts about bugginess.

I'd sure appreciate some direction. All I'm trying to do is do a nice
table-like layout for eBay listings.

it's a very strange problem.
can you try and do it with just "regular" tables rather than the layout
tables?
do you have a URL where we can see this misbehaving table?

Hi Chris,
1) Strange indeed! It looks better today. It must be feeling better.
However, one can still see picture misalignments right off the bat.

2) Yes, I did try just regular tables-- in fact, I tried those first,
because I figured the product worked just like Word, and I didn't know
anything about layout tables. I had the thing one step from being completed
and this big rectangle appeared in the middle of the layout that seemed to be
associated with the two cells below it. I tried for a couple of days to get
rid of it, and it wouldn't budge, so I hit the books, learned about layout
tables, and started over....

I REALLY need to get this done today. I'm thinking of massively simplifying
the layout by 1) bagging the left-side one-celled table 200pi wide, 2)
bagging the "It's All There" table that contains the picture that's a
different size than the rest, and 3) just having two tables-- (a) one with
all the individual product shots, and (b) following that table, a page-wide
table with the info contained in the 200pi left column. What do you think of
that as a workaround? Especially if I just try regular tables instead of
these fancy new-fangled layout tables?

3) I have uploaded my piece of work for your perusal-- it's at
http://members.cox.net/davidfhull/Carleton pages layout tables.htm

Yes, there are spaces in the address, but it works. It appears as though the
spaces are converted to %20 or something like that.

Thank you for taking a look at it. -- Dave

spaces (%20) will make a difference on Linux/Unix servers (which you are on), so will uppercase, lowercase file names...best to stick to lowercase and no spaces.

does your web have FP extensions installed? It's hard to tell on isp type set ups.

Hi, Rob, thanks for your advice.
1) Re: Spaces and lower case, I had read about that, but NOBODY BUT YOU ever
explained why, and unfortunately I'm a "why" perosn, so thank you. I shall
mend my ways.
2) Cox.net reports, "FrontPage Server Extensions are currently activated on
your Personal WebSpace," ,so yes, I apparently activated them some time ago.

Those two things said, all I'm trying to do is use FrontPage as a code
generator for eBay listings. When I get the page designed, I'll go to code
view, COPY the body code and PASTE it into the eBay "Item Description"
section. The only reason I put up the page on the net is so helpful people
can look it over.

I've generated item descriptions in MS Word 2000 before & it worked like a
charm. Should I just do that again? I still use Word 2000; don't know of any
compelling reason to upgrade. If I use Word 2000 , does anyone out there
know if one can point to the image server as easily as one can in FrontPage?
(i.e., by just typing in the URL in the "file" entry box. Does it work? --

I'm getting a 404 (page not found) on that link.
if you want, send it to me via the address in my signature link. I'm sure
it's something that'll appear obvious (hopefully) :)

I have used both Word & FP to generate code for other things (yes, I'm too lazy to hand code).

Hello, Chris and all,

http://members.cox.net/davidfhull/Carleton pages layout tables.htm

And yes, those are true blanks (space bars), not underscores; and yes,
Carleton is capitalized!

The pictures may or may not show up; I'm converting the file names to all
lower case and nothing but letters and numbers as Rob suggested.

Because of you improper use of spaces it is at
http://members.cox.net/davidfhull/Carleton pages layout tables.htm
- Open the page in you FP web and in code view right click to reformat html
Then remove all the height attributes from all the tables and cells

Stefan,

Ok...now I'm curious as to how the heck you even found that page?

Hi Rob,
If you click on the URL in Stefan's reply, it will take you right to it. I
just tried it and it works.

Stefan,
Or actually, I should address you as "Excellency," or Your Highness,
"Master," Your Lordship, but, I shall use my favorite:

Sahib,
Your direction worked like a charm! And, by not telling me how to look for
rows and columns, you left it challenging enough that I was scared sh-tl--s
when I was doing it, but then, once it worked, I felt a feeling of
accomplishment!!

Of course the first time I did it, I deleted some of the height info for
images, and I tried to eliminate what seemed to me to be useless code-- many
<tr> </tr> and <td> </td> were left after height attributes were eliminated!!
Anyway, I screwed it up first time through, so I closed, didn't save, started
back up, which reverted to a save before I screwed it up, then I VERY, VERY
CAREFULLY deleted height atributes of tables and cells WITHOUT TOUCHING THOSE
OF IMAGES, and without deleting what to me seemed to be empty, worthless rows
and columns. But hey, it works; maybe the code optimizer wil clean it up.

From now on, Sahib, I will remember to not designate height info for
anything unless I absolutely have to or something!

Thank you Thank YOU THANK YOU, Sahib Stefan ! You be THE GURU!
