Latest news on AMD price cuts?

N

NilEinne

Anyone know what's the latest on AMDs rumoured price cuts? Are they
going to be on July 28th after the Conroe officially launches? [And
therefore probably won't be noticable to us until August at earliest
:-( ]

I ask because I'm helping someone assemble a new comp. It's only for
Office work and the internet so will probably just be a Sempron so
unlikely to make that much difference in any case but just wondering
how things are going. Actually I am considering a Pentium D 805 because
as much as I dislike Intel and as crappy as the Pentium D is, this
doesn't change the fact that the average users doesn't ever see or need
the performance anyway but the advantages of dual core, especially with
Windows' sometimes crappy thread management may be be noticeable. But
it's a bit expensive and I expect extremely light usage in any case so
I'd probably just end up sticking with the Sempron

Cheers

At some places, the pricecuts are already visible: check
www.monarchcomputer.com's pre-setup and combo page, where you can get a
AMD64 X2 5000+ for $289 as part of a package (though it won't ship until
next week).

Price cuts are scheduled for July 24th, the same day as the Conroe
launch. Price cuts are QUITE drastic for the high-end, though much
less so for the low-end of things. Here's the latest pricing table
for bulk orders:

Note that you won't actually pay these prices, but they should give
you an idea as to just how much of a drop in price you're likely to
see.

The Pentium D 805 is a chip that I've been recommending for most users
for the past month or so due to the exact reasons you mention above.
The price has been pretty darn good, though next week things will
change again. FWIW Intel is also lowering the prices on their older,
non Core chips, including this Pentium D 805.
But
it's a bit expensive and I expect extremely light usage in any case so
I'd probably just end up sticking with the Sempron

Regardless of what you get, I would wait another week. Both Intel and
AMD are planning some fairly major price cuts at the start of the week
and by the end of the week you should start to see the affects of
things at the bigger on-line vendors at least. Normally I wouldn't
worry so much about when one company is reducing prices, but this
round of cuts is going to be sufficiently large that a week really
might make a noticeable difference.

Just hope I can find an X2 3800+($154) or an X2 4200+($179) somewhere next
week. Got my ten dollar Radio Shack SLI power supply and my $60 Nforce4 SLI
mobo already.Vid card after that.Man,there's some really good deals out
there if you can take your time. How low can I go?

<snip>

Two weeks later - you should have no problems finding either... though
both will be 89w version (ADA3800CUBOX or ADA4200CUBOX) ...
what we're still wondering when they'll be available / looking for is
the 35w version of the 3800+ X2 (ADD3800CUBOX)... expect to pay
a few dollars more for them, but haven't seen any listed ANYWHERE
yet... mumble
