Last post re USB2.0 - i promise !

I have now installed SP1 and the Microsoft USB upgarde
(xpclnt_qfe.020226-1835). Anyway, my USB isn't any faster so now i realise
that the ports were never USB2.0 campatible anyway.

So my question now is, can i go out and buy a USB2.0 PCI card and install it
into a PCI slot and get USB2.0 ? (i.e. is SP1 and a new PCI card enough to
get USB2.0, i won't have to get SP2 will I ?)

You still seem unsure as to whether you have USB2 already or not.
First off, make sure.
Rt-clk My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager & expand "Universal
Serial Bus controllers"
If you already have it, you will have a list of USB Universal Host
controllers, plus another obvious one something like "USB2 Enhanced Host
controller"

Haven't got that, or anything like that. All in there is things like Generic
USB Hub, USB Mass storage, USB Printing Support, USB Root Hub, VIA Rev 5 or
later Universal Host Controller. None of which mention USB2.0, that's what
made me think i'd need to go out and buy a PCI card.

The only place USB2.0 is mentioned is on one of the USB Mass Storage
Device, where it says 'Device type: Universal Serial Bus Controllers,
Manufacturer: Compatible USB storage device, Location: Location 0 (USB 2.0
Storage Device)'. However, i think that is referring to the USB HD i have
plugged into the USB port.

Also, whenever i plug my USB HD into any port, i get the message 'Hispeed
device plugged into a non-hispeed port', so i think that's a clue as to me
not having USB2.0

Still, question is, can i just buy a USB2.0 PCI card, and with the SP1 ihave
already installed, should that give me USB2.0 ??

SP 1 is sufficient to add a USB 2 PCI card.

That was supposed to be understood in my post, as you've now installed SP1,
USB2 would show up if you had it. Perhaps I should have been clearer.

Also as you've at last taken the plunge & installed SP1, go the whole hog &
do SP2 - I dare you :)

If you do have any problems, just roll back to the previous Restore Point -
simple as that.

Hi Anny,

Thanks you for posting here.

I have read through all four posts you submitted. The questions in these
four posts are related. In order to avoid confusion, let me answer your
questions in the one titled "Such thing as Firewire to USB cable/connector
?", If you have any concern, please also post back in that thread.

Thanks and have a nice day!

I thought you couldn't uninstall SP2 ????, Is that possible (like in SP1) ??

Also, you know how if you want to roll back and WinXP takes up extra space
keeping the 'rollback files', well if i have no issues with SP1 (or SP2)
after a few weeks, how can i get rid of these 'rollback' files to save
myself hard disk space ??

I just wait until I accumulate a few weeks of Restore Points, then Rt-clk My
Computer, Properties, System Restore tab, Setttings, slide the slider down
to 2%, O.K.
That deletes all but the last few.
Then just go through the same process but slide it back to Max. again.

Deletimg Critical Updates etc. after a few weeks -
Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View. Check "Show hidden files and
folders"
Now if you click on the Windows folder in Explorer, you will be able to see
a pile of Critical Updates in blue. Just delete the lot.

That removes the uninstall folders for those updates, but you may still find
a few listed in Add/Remove Programs.
Click on "Uninstall" for each of those (which it can't do, of course) but
will then give you the option to remove them from the list.

Well thanks to everyone who helped me in this. I just got a PCI USB2.0 card
with 4 ports for £12, stuck it in, works great. I tested a 125mb file.
Before, it took 155 seconds to transfer (0.81mb/sec) and now it takes 11
seconds (11.36mb/sec), so much better.

I'm happy with that, but any ideas why the box says the PCI card can do
48mb/sec yet mine is 11mb/sec, do i have to further tweak it ??

Cheers
Andy
