Last page of multicolumn document

I have a document formatted in three columns (newspaper style - snaking). The
last page has about 2/3 of a column of text. How do I force Word to balance
the column on the last page into three columns?

Insert a continuous section break after the last of the text.

Technically, this works only if the compatibility option "Don't balance
columns for Continuous section starts" is not checked. But since it isn't
checked by default, that shouldn't be a problem.
