Laser Samsung vs Inkjet Canon?

Giancarlo

I was ready to buy a laser printer (Samsung 1750, black and white).
However I noticed that laser printers' quality on gray images is
really bad!

So I am thinking about to buy an inkjet instead, probably a Canon i560
or i865 (the latter is said to make wonderful images).
Usually I print black/white texts, that's why I considered that a
laser printer would be better for me. However, sometimes I have to
enclose logos or graphs in my texts (nothing special, I don't need to
make photographs or color graphs, however, it may happen).

So, what are the cons of these inkjet printers, compared to the
Samsung laser?
Are texts as good-loooking like a laser printer?
These Canon are fast, and ink does not cost too much.

Furhter on, what does it mean: "maximum 1200x4800 dpi"? (Canon
inkjets)
What is the usual standard on regular paper?

I would be happy with 1200x1200 dpi on regular paper.
(That's why I would prefer a Samsung 1750, 1200x1200 dpi, rather than
a 1710, that is 600x600).

Thanks
Giancarlo

Lasers will print text better than any inkjet: if you look closely on
regular paper laser prints will usually have less spatter, look crisper and
can print smaller size fonts. They are faster for text.

You are correct that lasers generally are very poor at grayscale printing.

Lasers give a better look to business correspondence, which may be a
consideration. If you are printing low volume, need color and can only
afford one printer get the ink jet.

I am supposed to prefer a laser, since I need to print text documents
mostly.
However, I need to print b/w graphs and logos also, and lasers seem
very bad in this case. Very bad.
Probably I will get a inkjet just for this reason!

I am considering a "bubble jet" such as Canon i560 or i860 or i865.
I read that their text quality is not very different from a laser. And
I don't care about speed or even ink cost or whatever...

Thanks

You may want to get a color laser. It would be good enough for logo and
laser printed document is business class quality. No inkjets on _plain_
paper can compare to laser quaity.

Do you live in the U.S.?

If so, I would be happy to print out some logos and charts with my Samsung
and mail them to you for comparison purposes.

No, I am in Italy

Thanks for your help.
However, you may tell me something on the NG.
Do you have the 1750?

To see how fine a laser performs on gray images, usually I do this:
I get a US$1 bill (the Washington bill), I scan the front at 600 dpi
(color)
and then I print it at 300 dpi, 600 dpi, 1200 dpi.
(I did this with a Brother HL-5150D, maximum 1200x1200 dpi).

300 dpi is horrible.
600 dpi is bad.
1200 dpi is fine, but not very good as I expected.

However, all this depends or "raster" used.
More dots allow more grays, but resolution is worse.
Fewer dots allow fewer grays, but resolution is better.

6x6 gives at 600 dpi is not so bad; 4x4 and 8x8 are slightly worse;
2x2 is bad (too dark), 10x10 or more is also bad (low resolution).
However, all these are not enough for me.
So I understand that a 600 dpi laser print is not enough for me.

I think that a 1200x1200 laser is needed to get something good.

I also understand that a simple inkjet (like a Canon i560) may achieve
better results than a 1200 dpi laser on gray images.
However, on simple text documents, the inkjet is worse than the laser
....

My problem is to understand which "bad" is better :)
(Is it better the bad text on the inkjet, or the bad images on the
laser?)

Thanks
Giancarlo
