laser printer too faint

I have a Panasonic KX-P6100 laser printer that does not print very
dark. I have it on the darkest setting, it has plenty of toner and I
have done all the maintenance/cleaning listed in the user manual. The
only thing that does make it any better (but still not really good) is
if I wipe the drum with a tissue. I do this during the warm-up phase
and by opening the side door and interrupting the heating cycle when
the drum is turning, I can get to clean a different part of the drum.
At this stage the drum does seem to have some toner streaks on it.

Does anybody have any ideas for me? I am quite happy to tackle the
electronics and have a multimeter but am not experienced with laser
printers.

I would check with Panasonic but it may be time to replace the drum.

If that is the case, it may be more economical to replace the printer. How
many copies has it printed in its lifetime?
