Laptops losing connection with the domain

I was wondering if anyone has ever run across this problem. we have 2 laptops
in the office that go off site to work in the field, one came back a week ago
with an oddity, it was no longer able to log a user onto the domain. The
laptop was
still on the domain, but when the person or administrators try to login on
the machine over the domain it would freeze the login.

I switched the laptop to a workgroup and then tried to switch the laptop
back to the domain but it failed, "server cannot perform the operation."
Since the computer was still on the workgroup I tried to surf out, we do not
need to be on the domain to surf out, which worked just fine. I tried to ping
any internal address besides the gateway and all ping
requests timed out. I found that odd, I tested by taking a PC off the
network and tried to ping the server, that worked just fine, as I expected. I
then took both of the laptops that we have and in unison did the same changes
to both, deleted computers from the domain, took computers off the domain,
checked to see if the 2 computers could
ping the server and other machines (that worked on both machines now), then
I added both machines back to the network and that worked fine as well. In
the end I don't know why it wasn't working and I must have tried that process
about 10 times before it finally worked.

I guess my question would be, is there a timeout of sorts that has something
to the effect of, if the machine is not connected to the domain for a certain
number of days lock all domain users from login? I have been trying to find
information on the net but this problem seems to be fairly unique unless
someone mentions otherwise.

Thanks
