Laptop wont automaticly shut down

My dell laptop with winxp will not shut down or reset
automaticly. Each time it trys, it gets stuck on
the "Windows is now shutting down" screen, and sits like
that forever untill I press and hold the power button.
It hasnt always done this, it used to work just fine
