Laptop q. P4 mobile CPU temp and CPU fan

J

jameshanley39

i've got issues with computer noise..

got a laptop, toshiba satellite pro 2100

the fan noise starts out at a level that doesn't bother me. But at some
points it gets louder.. it doesn't take long.. I just open a browser or
an AV window and close it..

I think I narrowed it down Here are the CPU temps shown by speedfan

I don't know which temp is which, but it doesn't matter, because aside
from HDD, the others are about 50. And one of them is obviously CPU fan

Local Temp 49
Remote Temp 50
HDD 32
Temp 1 51

it reaches those values just going into windows
around those values the fan goes on.. OR maybe those values+1
So, I think when the CPU - perhaps "local temp" reaches 50 , the fan
goes up.

It doesn't do it for long. But I imagine that if i run more intensive
programs it might for longer.

The Laptop has 256MB RAM. If I use 512MB RAM , do you think it'll be a
lot better? i.e. CPU a lot less hot?

It's a P4-M. Are there CPUs for laptops that produce less heat, and
therefore fan not going that high?

I have seen Toshiba Satellites that behave really well noise-wise..
maybe that was unusual, I wish my friend still had it for me to figure
out why it is was so good

but maybe this one is like it is partly because 256MB RAM.. I'll
report back, but any ideas?

would a celeron be less hot? would 512 or 1GB RAM give the processor
less work and make it less hot?

TIA

Nope, it wont make any difference to that.

You cant normally change the cpu in most laptops.

The cpu fan may be clogged up with fur etc.
would a celeron be less hot?

There wont be much in it, and you cant necessarily change it anyway.

Nope.

i won't get my expectations high then..

I wasn't planning on it. I was hoping a celeron would be lower temp.
You say there won't be much in it. But a little can make some
difference 'cos it's only when the temp reaches a certain point that
the fan gets louder.

The cpu fan may be clogged up with fur etc.

it sounds healthy , it's possible but even if that was the case I don't
think that's te full reason why it's too loud. It's not that loud.
it's only too loud for my liking. It's quieter than most laptops, prob
quieter than a typical Dell laptop. And certain'y quieter than an AGP

another toshiba satellite i saw once was especially quiet, if only I
knew why. I don't remember its spec

There can be if you can replace a Prescott cpu with a Northwood tho.

Sure, but you dont know that it will take much if any longer.

It still sounds fine even when clogged with fur.

It may well be if it is actually clogged with fur, just
because it doesnt cool as well when its clogged with
fur and so needs to be run at the maximum speed.

Sure.

Yeah, mine is too, so quiet that you have to listen for it even at its worst.
And certain'y quieter than an AGP

Yeah, those fans arent that quiet, they're too small to be that quiet.

Yeah, it may well have had a Northwood cpu tho.

I didn't know p4 mobiles had prescotts and northwoods too.. I just
checked..

wcpuid didn't tell me but did say L2 cache 512MB. Would that be
northwood for sure?
is prescott 1GB ?

if this is not a check, how can I check - without opening it up
removing the cpu heatsink and reading the number

i'll check it

By the way..
a friend has a Sony s460 laptop. Will that RAM work in my Toshiba
satellite pro 4200 ?

I don't know about compatibility of RAM for laptops.. I know DDR for
desktops is all the same - works - just speed diff. And some have
DDR2 - notch, cut, key in different place. Dunno if laptop RAM is as
simple
<snip>

thanks

Everest and cpuid can tell you exactly what cpu is being used.

Use the Crucial memory configurator.

The main difference is that most use sodimms etc.
