Language error when upgrading WIN ME to WIN XP

When upgrading WIN ME to WIN XP I am getting an error
reading..."The language of this installation of windows
differs from the one you are installing, the option to
upgrade is not available"

Is there a way I can fix this without having to do a
clean install of XP ?

Unfortunately, you have different, language versions. What version of Me do you have?
