LAN wakeup howto???

Kenny

Hello there and thanks so very much for reading this and
helping if you are able. :)

I was wanting to know if either Home or Pro has any built
in software (DOS or GUI format) that allows you to use the
wake LAN feature.

And if so or I guess even if not, what port numbers do
these use if thats what they use over a small network. I
would want to disable this via the broadband router.

Thanks SOOOO very much for your help.

Sincerely,

Kenny

Hi, Kenny -

There's nothing that comes with Windows XP that'll allow
you to send the 'magic packet' that'll wake up a sleeping
machine, I'm afraid - but there are a couple of free
utilities out there that'll let you do stuff like this.
A google search should be pretty productive - I found a
couple of free programs by searching on 'free "wake on
lan" software'.

There's no port to block, Kenny - since WOL happens
before the machine has an IP address it works at a much
lower level than TCP-IP does. WOL packets won't pass
through any consumer-grade router I've seen so you should
be pretty safe. If you're still concerned, disable WOL
in the machine's BIOS ;-)

Hope this helps -

the software after I finish this message.
