....

It seems confusing and contradictory, but I believe the problem has to
do with the point in the boot process where pcmcia and scsi support
are provided. Normally, they're provided at some point after the
CD-ROM is accessed. Obviously, that can't work if the CD-ROM itself
requires pcmcia support.

So far I haven't found any Live-CD distro that supports running off a
pcmcia_SCSI CD-ROM. Nor have I found any explanation of this. If you
can install a full distro off a pcmcia_SCSI CD-ROM, as I've done
several times with Red Hat and Mandrake, you should be able to run a
Live-CD off one too, it seems to me.

Seems confusing to me as well ....

Best of luck with your continuing search efforts ....

Achim, I don't know if the infomation at the following link will be
useful to you or not. It's for a floppy only network install, but it
does provide for a way of installing a LiveCD to the hdd such that you
can add other elements to the installation as needed.

The script was tested on this equipment:
32MB memory
1.44 floppy drive
128MB HD
800x600 screen
Linksys PCMCIA network card model PCMLM56
Also works with Xircom RealPort2 Model R2E-100

I went and downloaded the discussion at the site, and after reading
through it, I still don't understand what exactly the purpose of the
script is. But my guess is that the term "poor man's live-CD" is a
metaphor, not to be taken literally.

It may be, but unfortunately the instructions and comments clearly put
it beyond my meagre Linux abilities.

The beauty of Knoppix (when it works) is that you simply pop the
Live-CD into your Windows system and a reasonable facsimile of a
full-featured Linux system pops up, all without the usual hair-raising
risks of installng a dual-boot setup.

What I'm looking to do only adds a small step to this process -
initiating the Linux loader from a floppy disk, where no bootable
CD-ROM drive is available. Knoppix 3.4 lets you do this once you have
the required two-floppy disk set, for which you have to have a working
version of Knoppix 3.4 (go figure!). The only hitch is that this
two-floppy boot set doesn't include the pcmcia_SCSI support needed to
initialize the external CD-ROM on my laptop (although it will support
an external SCSI CD-ROM on my desktop and let me install and run
Knoppix from it).

thanks anyway
