KMPLAYER

Perhaps. But it's not a genuine Microsoft product.

Using it may void your warranty and who wants that?

Seems there are new updates weekly too...

That's just pitiful.

Mr dumbell number 2, the Microsoft update is not on by default, you can
chose to turn it on when you install something like office, since it asks
you,
but you can turn it off too from the microsoft update site, or in vista you
have that option right on the OS

I dont like microsoft update and always turn it off.. I use windows
update...

and even then MS software is like 2% of all the programs I have on my
computer..

MS update doesnt update those, does it?

gesh you vista nerdy boys are thick

vista took that stupid thing (password asking) and made UAC

UAC in your face pops up even more frequently and is extreamly irritating

both are stupid and people hate them

But the base install of Ubuntu, with OO, and my base install of XP with
Office, the Ubuntu system will take longer to install and longer to
update than the xp machine, and Xp provides better hardware support not
to mention that most modern games are designed for Windows first, then
Linux.

Ehh? I'm sorry but earlier this year I did a clean reinstall on this
computer of both windows and Ubuntu when the new version of Ubuntu came
out. Perfect time to do so as Windows needed a cleanup and I prefer to
upgrade Ubuntu (or any OS for that matter) via clean installs rather than
in-place upgrades.

And honestly I have to tell you that it took significantly longer to
install XP and upgrade it to the appropriate service pack level than it
took to setup Ubuntu. Oh and that didn't include Microsoft office as I
had no need to install it.

And as far as the better hardware support goes...XP doesn't recognize
over half my onboard peripherals out of the box while Ubuntu does. I
actually had to use Ubuntu to download ethernet drivers for XP as XP
didn't even recognize my onboard ethernet.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not going to say that there isn't hardware
that is not supported by linux. There is. Matter of fact, I have a USB
Headset sitting right next to me that has piss-poor linux support. I
don't even bother using it under Linux. It works mostly but the volume
controls for it are buggy for some reason.

Then again, even under windows it requires special drivers from the
manufacturer, which are not 100% stable, to actually work right.
Definitely never buying from that manufacturer again regardless of OS.

But I will say this, when linux *does* support hardware, it generally
supports it instantly and out of the box without any hassle...unlike XP
where I need to track down a whole bunch of drivers first. And when linux
doesn't support hardware then it is generally limited to one particular
manufacturer and there usually are other manufacturers that are supported
with equivalent products. Printers for example, Cannon support is
pathetic so guess what! I just buy HP instead...Cannon's loss, HP's gain.

So really, unless you have something exotic that only one guy makes and
only makes for windows there normally aren't any problems.

I do fully agree with you about games though. That is one thing that
still annoys me, particularly since games are relatively easy to write
cross-platform when compared to GUI heavy applications. That is one area
that I hope will improve with the future, but for now, it is the pretty
much only reason why I dual boot windows at home.

Whatever "comes" on the disk I BOUGHT is part of the OS.
Notice I paid $35 for it with a book.
That puts me in the 7% bracket of linux users that actually part with their
money for software : D
They should mail me an award or certificate or something !

35 bucks? Man you got a long way to catch up to me. =)

That said, on the prior update statement, why is it by the way that
people like you get their panties all tied up into a bunch when an OS
like Ubuntu has updates?

Why the hell would it NOT have updates? It changes over time. It is being
maintained. Things are added / changed....why is this bad thing?

No actual linux user would ever claim that Linux doesn't have updates. So
why is it that windows users expect it not to?

Stop looking at my panties !
And they aren't in a wad...it was simply an observation.
People like me ?
You know me ? A neighbor of mine ?
Stick to yakking about software.
From the "look" of ubuntu...200 + MB of updates seems a bit larger than the
whole OS should be.

It's something that comes up very frequently in this OS about people who
try out Ubuntu. "GASP!!!! It had UPDATES!! OH NO!! The sky is falling!"
type responses ya know =)

That said, there probably was at least one open office update in
there. That's easy 50-80 megs for a complete OO update. OO is rather
large....

If there was a kernel update, easily another 20-30 megs. Now that is
definitely an OS Update!

Restricted driver modules update, if there was one, also isn't exactly
small.

The one thing about Ubuntu and linux is that they evolve very rapidly. I
mean, we are only about 4 months away from the next Ubuntu
release....that'll be a much larger update than 200 megs! :)

I don't really see that as a bad thing.

I do.
Which new windows manager will it use this time?
Everything else should be up to date anyway.

Assuming that anything is static in the OS world is naive, Dennis.
Ubuntu is continually being improved and that is a good thing.

No problem here to do it in less than an hour.

Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 4GB 800MHz DDR2 HyperX and all hard drives of course
SATAII.

No problems installing Ubuntu in under an hour, downloading and
installing updates included. 6mbit connection does help....

I clearly said it was a P3 and I have an 8mbps connection, and downloads
took hours.

That's just a busy server. Had you stopped the download and waited 15
minutes, you would have probably gotten a faster download. I just
downloaded 38 MB in less than a minute with a 12 Mbit connection.

You're distorting the perceptions again Leythos. You know damn well that the
initial install includes MANY packages of additional software beyond the
basic o/s. In fact, it includes enough stuff to make it a replacement for
XP plus numerous high cost additions.

Cheers.

90 minutes to install Ubuntu 7.10? You must be joking. (or simply lying).

He's a known lier, but in this case, he's probably right. He really lacks
computer skills and hence it took him that long.

Cheers.

No lie, I've done this many times, and the ISO burned to CD, then click
the Install Icon on the desktop, then wait for it to partition the drive
(full drive), then wait for it to install the base apps, then wait for
it to check for updates, then wait forever for it to download the update
packages, then install.....

Don't even start to suggest that it is better with hardware, I searched
BestBuy, Circuit City, and several other sites for a printer that was
listed in the compatible group that was under $150, since none of the
persons Cannon or Lexmark printers was compatible.

As for light years ahead - yea, sure, every time you want to install
something it asks you for your password, the same one you logged into
the PC with, and then it installs it - how is that different than vista
and how is that security? It should be asking you for the root password
so that you can't install anything without it.
Proof positive that you're really incompetent.

Cheers.
