keypad dot in command-line DOS programs

On my two computers which are using Windows XP Home
Edition, the dot key on the numerical keypad does not
work in DOS programs like WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS. Is
this a flaw in my equipment, or a program defect?

Do you have "Num Lock" turned on?
With Num Lock on it is a dot (period).
With Num Lock off it is a Del key.

Does the key work for Windows programs, like notepad? Does the key work
when toggled (with Numlock ley) to act as a Delete Key. You are
probably a longtime user of WordPerfect for DOS (?) ... did it ever
work? Answers to these will give clues to the root-cause.
