Keyboard shortcut for bullet

In Word 2003, I'm looking for a keyboard shortcut for the Bullet button on
the Formatting toolbar.

Also, what precisely is the function of that button? Obviously I know
approximately what it does: it puts in a bullet. But I've noticed that it
behaves differently from time to time, in terms of indentation, bullet size,
bullet character, etc. I can't figure out exactly what's happening.

Shortcut for bullets: ctrl+shift+L.
