Keyboard problem

M

Martin Thomas

Hi, I'm working on a friends pc, I have the tower with me at home an
was told that it freezes all the time.
I have just discovered that it's caused by the keyboard, the second
key is pressed the pc just freezes up.
I can't tell you the make of keyboard he uses, but it's USB through PS
adapter. It's currently running with my spare keyboard which is a Compa
PS2 and it's fault free.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If the machine works fine at your house using a regular ps/2 keyboard,
then the issue is with your friend's keyboard. Have him use a regular
ps/2 keyboard or a regular USB keyboard, but not a USB keyboard using a
USB adapter.

Thanks Malke, it doesn't work with any ps/2 keyboard. It's showing the
exclamation mark in Device Manager so appears to have no driver
installed, I have the disc for the MOBO but can not find the ps/2
driver anywhere and even an auto install does not work and nothing on
the company web site either
(MSI motherboard and the ps/2 sockets are FOXCONN).

I'll try my wireless/usb keyboard in it to see if that has any effect
but I'm guessing that he will have to use his keyboard without the usb
to ps/2 adaptor.

I'm sorry - I misunderstood you to say that your ps/2 keyboard worked
fine. If it doesn't and you've tried more than one standard ps/2
keyboard, it could very well be the physical port on the motherboard.
This will be confirmed if a USB keyboard works. If a USB keyboard works,
I'd just use that.

Sorry my fault. I've just tried his keyboard by using the usb port and
although the pc now doesn't freeze when a key is pressed, only a couple
of key strokes work on the keyboard ie the power off key and sleep key,
nothing else. I used my wireless keyboard too via usb and that didn't
work either so I am guessing that I could be looking at a reformat to
see if I can't pyhsically force the drivers in.

I'll keep you posted.

It's not showing an error code in the Device Manager just the
exclamation mark over the keyboard icon

The PS2 keyboard/mouse may show up in Device Manager as connected directly
to the PCI -ISA bridge, or something similar, with no mention of a PS2 port
or drivers for it as such. Look at Devices by Connection.

Have you got the proper drivers for the keyboard in question? Windows has
stock keyboard drivers that should give basic functions for most wired
keyboards. A working PS2 port will operate on Windows drivers as well,
assuming the keyboard plugged into it isn't the source of the problem. A
keyboard that has been wet for instance, or has otherwise damaged circuits.

Keyboard driver problems are more typical when you install multimedia or
"internet" keyboards with additional function buttons. These keyboards
require additional drivers and close enough is often not good enough. It's
also possible pre-existing keyboard drivers could cause a conflict.

You can get varying responses from one computer to another with wireless
keyboards. On this keyboard the Function keys do not work until you
depress the F Lock after reaching the Desktop. This makes the normal
route to Safe Mode using the F8 key unworkable. On another computer it
has the same problem plus you need to depress the Num Lock key to get
the the numeric keyboard to work. This has to be done after every
Start-Up but not so on my personal computer where the setting sticks.

As I asked earlier what is the error code in Device Manager?

Right click on the Device and select Properties. The Error Code will
appear under status on the General tab. An example:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

you can only use a PS/2 to USB adapter if the keyboard was designed for it
- you can NOT simply use one of those adapters on any ole keyboard, you'll
fry something on the MoBo or in the keyboard, or both. Double check,
usually it'll say on the bottom if it'll do either PS/2 or USB.

the same goes for mice - they must be designed to use the adapter.

Help. After my last update for Vista, when I turn on my computer to sign in,
my keyboard isn't recognized. After I turn if off and then turn it back on,
it works again. What do I do to fix this problem????
