keyboard/mouse issues

I have a WinXP Home SP2 PC that is having issues with the mouse and keyboard.
I know both devices work properly, as they work when I get into my PC's BIOS
setup, and when I press F8 to get the Advanced Startup Options. However,
once Windows loads, whether it be in Normal mode or Safe Mode, the mouse and
keyboard both loose their functionality. I am not sure what has happened, or
what to do to reverse the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
as the PC is pretty much in a non-working state right now with them not
working. I've re-seated the connection on both the mouse and keyboard and no
help. They are both PS/2 devices, and I made sure that the pins on each
cable were not bent or broken. The two devices work fine on other machines.
I then tried plugging them into a USB port replicator, thinking that if it
was a problem with the PC's PS/2 ports, then maybe I could use the PS/2 ports
on the replicator, but that has not produced any better results. So I would
appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Hello Jeff
Two ideas. Well more like one, unless you can get to internet and update
your hardware from the PC makers website. If no luck there go to add-remove
programs
and unistall SP2 then if your keyboard works upate all hardware and all
drivers before reinstalling SP2. Keep going back to Microsoft.com untill the
update window tells you there are no more updates for your PC. It will take a
little while but you can apply SP2 two ways. The right way or the wrong way.
There are a lot of hot fixes and updates to those hotfixes. Miss one or get
tired and quit you may as well miss them all. At least you are working on
getting your machine back up.
Best of luck to you

SP2 if the keyboard and mouse do not work???

The computer is a custom built system. Thanks again for your interest in
helping me out.
