Keyboard and letters on screen not the same

Please help,

Suddenly I was typing and the letters on the right hand side of the
keyboard were typing out numbers rather than letters on a laptop
computer. For example the "U" key was producing a "1" (or something
like that) on the screen and the "P" was producing a "-" on screen. I
may have pressed a combination of keys accidentally since I was using
Control-C and Control-V several times and accidentally used Control-P
for paste instead. Could have this caused this problem? Strangely
enough when I hold down the Fn key and press the letters, they type
the letters normally on screen.

Thanks!!

You've probably activated the NumLock key on your laptop. Most laptops lack
the space for a numeric keypad, so the keys on the right hand side of the
keyboard do double-duty - working as conventional letters (U,I,O,P etc) when
NumLock is OFF, and as a numeric keypad (4,5,6,X) when it's ON.
Try turning Numlock off and this should fix the issue.
