It's not "them," it's "it"--singular.

The kernel is a part of Windows. Just like the wheat kernel is the central
part of a grain of wheat, the Windows kernel is the central part of Windows.
It's not something you have control of or do anything with. It's there
working for you all the time.

then why would I want to manager it in Tast Manager/Performance if there is
nothing I can do about it????

Amazing what you can find on your own machine if you take the time to look.

From the Windows Glossary in Help and Support...

kernel
[[The core of layered architecture that manages the most basic operations of
the operating system and the computer's processor. The kernel schedules
different blocks of executing code, called threads, for the processor to
keep it as busy as possible and coordinates multiple processors to optimize
performance. The kernel also synchronizes activities among Executive-level
subcomponents, such as I/O Manager and Process Manager, and handles hardware
exceptions and other hardware-dependent functions. The kernel works closely
with the hardware abstraction layer.]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Me and Sam Spade. :)

Help and Support is the first place that I look for any Windows/computer
help. That's why MS placed a link for it on the Start Menu.

Beats me why you *want* to, but you can't. Although you can see a report
there of how much memory it's using, you can't change it or manage it in any
way.

In that case, you must be running Windows PX instead of XP.

Try the popcorn without the added hyphen.. it renders each kernel a little
less active that it would otherwise be..
