Kerberos KDC not starting. Eventid 7023; Error 31

I've got a Windows 2000 DC that has a huge problem at startup!

The KDC can't start, and reports an error in the eventlog, eventid 7023,
indicating that "a device attached to the system is not functioning".

Trying to start it from the Services console results in error 31 and the
same description.

netdiag and dcdiag fail trying to connect to the domain.. which obviously
isn't listening.. no LDAP etc.

Can anyone help!?!?

Thanks.. after trying those utilities I realize that I have to back up a
bit.. RPC itself isn't working!

The RPC and RPC Locator services show as started in the services console,
and there are no errors about RPC not starting in the system eventlog. (The
first error in the system eventlog after system startup is about the KDC).
But port tcp/135 is not listening! So I guess we're nowhere without that.

Also.. forgot to mention that this is the only DC for the domain!
