keeping track of orders

Let's say I'm starting a business. I want to keep track of all the
sales orders by number. I'm starting at Sales Order #1. Is there a
function in Excel which will automatically number my sales orders for
me so as not to duplicate any order numbers? I'm talking about every
day picking up where it left off the previous day. So I can have as
many sales orders as I'd like without ever having it generate a
duplicate number? Thank you in advance.

I know it is not what you asked totally,
but can I recommend you incorporate the date in your invoice numbers.
Such as the serial number of the Date, or Week number, and Day .
Then increment your invoice numbers up from there.

It gives you some benefits. You can imediately see how many invoices
were created for a day.
There will be no duplicates. And you can use the prefix date as a
method for sorting sales.
If you are truly getting started you won't ever have a customer
wondering why they were invoice number #2 and then a week later #3.
It would look more like #39499-2 and then later #39506-3
Looking successful is important too.
