Hiya Chris,
"Standby" mode is designed for users who are on portable devices or are
conscious about power usage, and as such the machine will go into standby
where it is essentialy powered off- to conserve power. Unfortunately in this
state it is not possible to perform network services.
Perhaps rather than standby you might investigate alternate power saving
means eg. power down monitor, hard drive etc. Right click desktop, click
properties click screen saver and there should be power saving options at
the bottom.
