keeping icons

These are called favicons and they are kept in Internet Explorer's cache.
Cache files are gradually replaced as you browse the web, so the icons
disappear. To keep them, you must first save the icon to your computer, ( try
the Icon Grabber from Mindzilla at http://www.mindzilla.com/grabber.php ),
then right-click the Internet shortcut, choose Properties, then Change Icon.

Hi Mary,

These are generally known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the
stored icons.

Workaround:

Navigate to the Temporary Internet Files, and drag the icons to the desktop
and rename them to whatever name you like.

Create a folder called Icon Selection. Move all of the renamed favicons to
this folder placed in the root directory of C. Right click on the Icon,
select Browse and navigate to your Icon Selection folder. Choose the
renamed favicon and click ok. These icons will be permanent.

When you right click on an icon, select browse and navigate to the Icon
Selection folder. Choose the renamed favicon you want and click ok. Your
customized icons will be permanent.

I've started saving icons also. However, all the icons for .ico files that I
put in a separate folder abruptly lost the normally displayed icon for that
file. That is in Explorer, they used to show the actual icon that the .ico
file represented. Now it seems to show only a default file icon.

I'm using XP Pro. The vbs file from Kelly's website didn't seem to cure the
problem. And the folder display parameters seem to be OK. And the bookmarks
in IE, linked to the .ico files display properly. Is there another icon cache
in Win Explorer?

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico
In the right, set the (default) to "icofile" (without " )

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\DefaultIcon
In the right, set the (default) to "%1" (without " )

I've done that. The registry items are OK. Is there a Win Explorer icon cache
limit setting? This didn't start happening until I had collected about 15
..ico files in the folder. With just a few, it was OK.
