KB835732 Setup Error

I am trying to install this security update on some obscure computers at work
running XP Professional. It works as anticipated on most, but on a few I the
installation fails.

Someone suggested trying a manual install, others suggested I try safe mode,
still others thought maybe I should sell my assests and go to Kabul if I
can't do something like install security patches (ouch... lol). I did the
manual install and the patch failed.

I tried to install in safe mode but it too failed. At least I know what is
going on. In safe mode I receive the "KB835732 Setup Error... The file
C:\program files\netmeeting\nmcom.dll is open or in use by another
application. Close all other applications and then click Retry."

Of course I closed everything that is possible and to still have the
computer run, and tried to install the update again. I still receive the
error message.

I have looked all over all the support sights etc. and do not see an answer
to my problem. ...*whines*.... I don't wanna go to Kabul -- Please Help
:.(......

1)Someone haven't previously done some "hacks" to remove Netmeeting on this
computer?

Anything is possible... Net Meeting is not loaded on any of these computers.
I don't know if that was removed or if it was never loaded.

2) Does the C:\program files\netmeeting\nmcom.dll file exist at all?

Yes, the file exists on all of the computers.

3)If the file exists, run the following command in a command prompt(run e.g.
cmd.exe from Start/Run to open one):

cacls.exe "%ProgramFiles%\NetMeeting\nmcom.dll"

What is the exact output from it (you can copy paste text from a command
prompt window)?

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\lcop4>cacls.exe "%ProgramFiles%\NetMeeting\nmcom.dll
Access is denied.

Netmeeting is always installed, it comes with the OS installation.

Take ownership of the file (you should do it on the Netmeeting folder
and all the other Netmeeting files as well).

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Then check the rights on the folder/files

Be sure that "SYSTEM" and "Administrators" have full control.

Here is the cacls output from my computer:

C:\>cacls.exe "%ProgramFiles%\NetMeeting\nmcom.dll
C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\nmcom.dll BUILTIN\Users:R
BUILTIN\Power Users:C
BUILTIN\Administrators:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
<my domain user>:F

Ugh... Thanks so much. I don't have to do a stint in Kabul now!! Guess I
better start reading up on XP. You are absolutely correct!! I did not have
NTFS permissions on the NetMeeting directory (nor on a lot of the other
directories even though I was signed in as administrator). Wow I took my
permissions for granted. Thank you so very much!! :)
