KB823980 Setup error

Hi, I am running Windows Xp Home Edition and i recieve a
error message when trying to indtall the security patch
for the "Blaster worm". The error reads "KB823980/ Setup
could not
verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure
the Cryptographic
service is running on this computer." I am not sure what
to do about this. If you can help please respond. Thanks
a lot.

Hi Joey,

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 wintrust.dll

If that doesn't help:

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the following
commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

I just resolved the same problem today! Go to the
following website... www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-
service.html. Then go down to the instructions for
installing the Windows XP Security patch.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get the patch which will now be OK. Then Q817287 and install it,
which is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry
on with other updates, and the problem will not recur
