Kaspersky 6 or BitDefender 9 Internet Security or NOD32+OutPost Pro+Ewido+NetLimiter?

Art,

The KAV suite (little s), or if you will, the KL suite, is KIS. KAV
6/2006 is part of KIS 6/2006, which includes the KAH firewall and KAS
(POP3 and IMAP4 Anti-Spam). I believe the goal is to use the year as
the number for all future releases. Both KAH and KAS are relatively
new KL products, and I have seen some good reviews in the KL fora.
Many people have been using KIS 2006 Beta for several months now.

I don't know if IDS is included with KAV anymore. It was designed only
for those without a PFW, and causes problems for most people with one.

Whatever they called the module in KAV 6 Beta it had nothing to do
with a firewall. The firewall is in KIS ... which is actaully the
suite, as we agree on. But however they characterise the new module
in KAV 6 (not the suite) it is some form of extra intrusion detection
IIRC. And it's the inclusion of that that I see as the new generation
"basic av". Certainly not suites.
I believe that the new thinking is that IDS should not be part of the
AV product.

Really? When I looked at it I was impressed with it, and thought it
was very definitely a move in the right direction. I'd be very very
surprised if they drop it.

Art,

Perhaps I should rephrase that. I believe that the thinking is that
IDS should not be part of the AV engine. Whether it is part of the KAV
distribution/installation or only KIS, I don't know. I will try to
find the KL Fora post(s) that led me to believe that.

Well, I'm probably confusing matters by referring to the new "enhanced
detection" module as a intrusion detector. I simply can't recall what
the new module in version 6 of KAV is called or exactly how it's
characterised. All I remember is that it had features designed to act
as a additional layer of defense in the event malware isn't detected
by the scanner. Unfortunately I didn't make notes when I took a
look at the Betas. I figured I'd take a closer look later on. But I
was left with the feeling that such approaches are probably going
to become standard and expected in the near furure.

Art,

I thought that I would update the thread. You were referring to
Proactive Defense. It is/will be part of both KAV and KIS 6/2006. Its
heuristics are different and separate from those of the KAV engine.
