Just too darn complicated

Ever since these Security vulnerablities discovered in Windows 2000 this past year Microsoft's attempts too fix the issues have led to a more or less disfunctional Windows 2000. Here is what I am going through at the moment. This is Windows 2000 Server SP3.

Let's start out by saying that SP4 is boneheaded. So I won't install that. When I installed that in Windows 2000 Professional with an MDAC security update that was the end of the .NET Framework. So let's not go there.

I am at the moment dealing with a completely broken HTML Help system. According to Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822989

this is a result of a number of Security updates for all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer that can be installed in Windows 2000. Well I have none of those that are discussed in this article installed. But that means nothing as we all know Microsoft's Cumulative Security updates include updates from previous Security updates. Things begin to get really nasty when you look at this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828750

But according to the first link I gave, we can fix the issue by installing this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q811630/Default.asp

But as you can tell from this link it is only for Windows 98.

So what we have here is a hodgepodge of security fixes for security fixes that were supposed to fix some security violations and after all is said and done we have a Windows 2000 with no HTML Help.

Can anyone suggest a way to fix the HTML Help issue in Windows 2000 Server SP3 w/o SP4. Here are my installed hotfixes. I have no non-public hotfixes installed. Thanks.

Fixed. Returned IE back to version 5.01SP2. Then downloaded and installed:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=811630

for Windows 2000. Reboot.

Hi

The article in the first link points to KB article 811630, and you will find downloads for Win2k, WinXP and NT4 as well in that article:
