just some questions...

i was just wondering about my previous encounter with the horrendous
"BlueScreen" error. basically, my laptop, which had vista home basic, just
shuts down by itself and after rebooting, displays an error:

However, so far, i have not encountered this problem again, and i would just
like to have some more "professional" opinion, as to what i MAY have did
caused the problem. Here are some of the things that are more pertinent to
me, after doing some research and some considerations, these were the factors
that seemed the likeliest to me that caused the problem. i just need some
feedback if these factors were possible causes of the bluescreen error.
thanks :)

1) Zonealarm (+other antivirus programs?)> i think that since vista is new,
these types of software EVEN THOUGH advertised to be vista "ready" maybe
causes of the problem? I currently have avast, avg and zonealarm, all basic
and free versions. And i read somewhere that people were having problems with
zonealarm on their vista? i currently have the most recent versions of all of
them.

2) ram too low?> i have just a 512 mb ram, and i know that this is just
barely meets the minimum requirements of running vista, but well, it came
with it. So is it possible that this was the caused of the bluescreen error?
And as a follow up question, is having a 512 mb ram and a dual core celeron
1.86 ghz processor not enough to make vista run smoothly? sometimes there are
some lapses in the displays of windows in my desktop from a minimized
position and the generation of icons in these windows is sometimes slow as
well.

3) driver problems?> two things that i think are the most notable for me are
the drivers for my wireless card, intel wireless pro 945 express and (IS IT
EVEN POSSIBLE???) my mouse? iv installed an updated driver for the wireless
card and i think it made things somewhat better. and i know it may be silly
of me to even think of this, but is it possible that my mouse driver is just
not compatible with vista? it came with a ps/2 head that i used to connect to
my desktop pc before, but since my laptop had no such port, i removed the
head and connected it to a usb port. is it possible that this might be the
cause for the problem or slowness? since the speeds with a usb connection is
much faster and therefore "unregulated"?

***** Sorry for the long post, but these are just some questions that i
humbly ask to those who may have more advanced knowledge than me in terms of
these fields. and i would just like to ask for some of your opinions
regarding these matters and questions. thank you :) finally, which is the
most probable cause of the error and apparent slowness of my system, if any
at all? ;-)

1. Drop Zonealarm and use the Windows Firewall
Use Avast and if you have AVG installed do not set it to do
anything automatically. Only one Anti-virii in memory at a time.

2. Yes add more ram

3. Update all your drivers and hard drive utilities if any. Check for
new BIOS to see if any updates apply to you.

You should always make sure your drivers are up to date, especially with an
OS that is relatively new as early drivers tend to be less complete and less
stable.

I'd agree, your ram is way too low and if your ram is being shard with an
onboard graphics card, it's unacceptable low and could well cause the system
to crash.

As small as it may seem, converting a PS/2 device to USB as in running it
off the USB port can cause system instability and laptops are noteworthy for
being finicky.
