just found another reason to go back to XP

Have you tried Firewire? Here the picture quality of the captures went
decidedly up.

Yes I have firewire PCI card in my old PC (running XP) but a lot of the
time I used to hook up the Sony handycam camcorder by USB and got on fine
with it - my new PC only has a measly 2 PCI sockets and I am expected to use
one of them up now with a PCI firewire card if I want to use my Sony
camcorder with vista.

I am not into writing code or software or drivers or anything like that but
honestly how much would it cost Sony's developers to write a USB streaming
camcorder driver to work with vista, not that much surely?

Agreed, especially since they seem to highlight their line of computers
being so 'multi-media' etc. etc. you'd think they's have all their drivers
ready. Oh well, you have to go with what works for you and if XP is what you
like ..

I first tried my Handycam with USB and had to install the SONY software for
the USB to work on Vista because Vista didn't work with the Handycam without
them [and I really did not like the SONY software]. However, with the
Firewire connection, Vista recognizes the cam and everything works with no
SONY software whatsoever .. go figure, eh?

Anyway, have a nice weekend sir.

Thanks I had a nice weekend after all and when I went back to using XP it
got even better :)

I do remember getting XP in 2002 though and not getting on with it and not
finding drivers etc to run with it and went promptly back to win98, its like
history repeating itself - who knows maybe in the end one day I will like
vista once more!

Can we blame the people who got a chance to test the beta versions as well?

no.. the beta testers gave great feedback.. but the vista team had their

If you can, pop for Firewire .. you will like the results. Vista, BTW,
handles the SONY really well here .. I didn't even install the SONY
software.

Just so it is clear, firewire per se has absolutely nothing at all to do
with picture quality. If the camera, on the other hand, streams with
different compression for USB vs. firewire, there can be a difference. When
will the world learn that bits are simply bits? Maybe you want a monster
cable firewire cable to get an even better picture?

I think I can get 640x480 resolution when I hook up my Sony camcorder by USB
in winxp - I don't know what the highest resolution its if I hook it up by
firewire - I always thought that it was that movies transfer better by
firewire because of the speed of the firewire connection?

I think if I see a company that brings out new vista drivers in a timely
fashion that would mean a lot to me next time I go out shopping for a new
PC
component/peripheral and would stick with that company - if however a
company said that they are not bringing out vista drivers for their
existing
products (even though the item is not right out of date!) then I will stay
clear of that companies product and wont buy from them again. That's the
way
I would play it anyway.

The companies that are not supporting their existing products (even if
they
are out of warranty) why should I bother to give them my business again

Sony are relying on M$.. the firewire DV interface is the same on most DV
cameras and M$ have supplied a driver to support it in Vista.

Sony know their DV cameras will work using this and can't be bothered to
write a USB driver for each model as they are all different.
They also know that most people will be using firewire as it gives much
better quality of video.. it is doubtful that USB2 could stream full
resolution DV.

I don't see why you have a problem adding a firewire card to your PC.. I
know you only have two free PCI slots but there aren't many PCI cards to fit
these days.. nearly everything is available in USB2. Unless you actually
have some PCI cards you want to fit I think you are just making the problem
yourself.

When you connect using firewire you transfer DV (720x576 for PAL IIRC, about
10Gbytes per hour or about 75% of USB2s bandwidth).

USB2 transfers tend to be compressed video and a lower resolution (except in
the USA where 640x480 is better than broadcast).
Its not that USB 2 can't do DV its just that it can't on many PCs while most
can do DV over firewire (I even did it using an old 486 machine).

Of course if you have a mpeg camera things are different as the bit rates
are much lower (20-30 times lower).
