Just a couple of basic questions

Long time 98se user here. Got just a couple of XP Questions.

1. When using the software built into windows xp for burning a cd. (not a
store machine) just the standard default included with xp, if you have a
file that is too deep or too long of a name or what ever the problem may be,
xp reports the file could not ba copied do you want to retry, skip, or
cancel. Is there anyway to find out what the details of the error are so
you can fix it without a lot of research?

2. Since xp uses a lot of pictures ie thumbnails in the folders when you
copy folders from one machine to another depending on the folders you looked
at thumbs.db are created. This can be a pain because the thumbs are
considered system files yet are not hidden when you do a properties check on
a folder so you get a count of all files including thumbs and the size
includes the thumbs. I would like to know if there is a way to hide them
from the properties. On 98 they did not count unless you had the hidden
files and folders showing. I bring this up because if you have a cd and
want to compare it using a compare program you have to account for all the
thumbs db by doing a search and altering the info by what you find in your
search.

3. Saved html webpages. On 98 if you were on a website and choose to save as
webpage complete you could delete the associated folder and just keep the
html page if you decided you did not need it. In xp if you delete one or the
other they both go into the trash.

Thanks for any help with this.

It is a very basic facility, and if you feed it with file names too long
for the ISO standard, then it will not provide any means to change then
- just says it can't cope. Really better to get a third party program
compatible with whatever you use in 98. See more at my page

About all you can do is turn off the caching of thumbnails (in Folder
Options - View). That means they have to be regenerated when you open
a folder in Thumbnail view. Which is the bigger inconvenience depends
on what you are doing. Or don't use Thumbnail view.

Use TweakUI for XP - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed
XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Many useful facilities - the one you want is on the Explorer page
'Manipulate connected files as a unit. Uncheck it
