Joining the network - Shared resources

I am sure this is simple.

I am adding a new laptop our system, and every thing appears to be
correct. However, when I try to see the shared resources on the network,
I get a message saying I don't have permission to see the resources. I
have set the machine ID, and it belongs to the correct work group.
ipconfig shows that the machine is getting an IP address in the correct
subnet. I can ping other machines on the network. I have run the wizard
to join the work group. There is no Domain, and we are not using LDAP.
Any suggestions as to where to look/what to change will be greatly
appreciated.

No domain means that for the most part - access to shared recources has to
do with file/share permissions (per user)...

Are you using 'simple file sharing'?

Yes. Maybe. I think so. Where would I look on the problem machine to
find out?

The other 10 or so machines on the network have no problems, and when I
added a new machine about a week ago, it came right up, no problem.
