Joining a domain - losing access, settings etc XP Pro

Have XP Pro on brand new computer set up for myself (workgroup).
Everything is set up, personalized with e-mail account, applications and
documents folders etc. Now I need to log on to a company network (domain).
Have tried this before and lost all access to my files, settings etv.
Is there a way for me to have my computer join the corporate domain without
losing everything again?

Once the Administrator has created your username and password, you should be
able to Log onto the domain and retain your local user account. What I would
do is apply a password and turn off Welcome Screen in User account. Create
another Administrative account on the computer and Join the Domain from that
account, then go to C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username and and copy
over the files to the account on the Domain.

Also make sure that the username that is on the domain is not the same as
the one you are using now.

Hi,

I was told to do this to have a domain account access the workgroup account.
I did it on my test systems and it works. My company is changing over from
a workgroup to domain soon, so I have to do this on all the computers. The
steps are:

Accessing Workgroup Account from Domain Account

1. First thing is to make an account for the use on the Domain server.
2. Change the user`s computer from WorkGroup to Domain
3. Log on as that user
4. Click Start>Run type in `regedit`
5. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. Look at the registry key named
ProfileImagePath, and examine each S-1-5-21-xxxxx files and find the entry
that has the username with xxxxx.cyberfirm and change that to just the user
name. That will point the domain logon to the original user profile in
Documents and Settings
6. Close the registry and log off
7. Log on as the user again, but this time it will use the original
Workgroup profile instead of the domain profile.
8. Log in as administrator and delete the domain profile that was created.

Hi again,

You will have to adjust the one part for your domain name though. Forgot to
change that in the other post. But it works, the solution was given to me by
one of the many kind MVP`s here

Hi

We solve this by (in the registry) changing the profile path for
the new user to point to the old user's profile folder (the user
needs to log on at least once first).

If the user is not a local admin, you might need to to something on the
permission side. Use tip 4631 and 2240 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at
