Jerky image and sound

T

Tony Cooper

I've just captured the second video I've made on my new video cam.
The video is about 30 minutes long and the filesize is 1.79 gigs.
It was captured in .avi mode with a FireWire.

When playing it back either in MM or Windows Media Player, the video
jerks from image to image. Almost a stop-action effect or a series of
stills played in a slideshow. The audio is the same: a few words
here and there, but no continuous sound.

A previous video - my first - came out just fine. The smoothness,
anyway; I have a lot to learn as a cameraman.

The video plays back just fine on the camera itself in the play mode.

I don't know where to start looking for a solution. I did some
Googling and checked PapaJohn's page, but I don't know how to phrase
the search terms to determine what the problem might be.

What settings or computer issues should I check out?

Assuming it plays back fine on the camcorder... it's usually a hard drive
issue. Give it a tune-up by freeing up space and defragging..

If you need more than that, try capturing with the WinDV utility (link on
the Setup > Other Software page of my site). It uses a larger buffer and
gives you feedback on any dropped frames as you capture. One dropped one is
too many.
