Jedi Academy and Catalyst 3.7 - Weird flickering problem

G

Glzmo

I have got some heavy flickering of the graphics in Jedi Academy on my ATi
Radeon 9700 Pro with Catalyst 3.7 Windows XP drivers running DirectX 9.0a.
It isn't present in the menue, however in 3D sequences and the game itself
there the flickering occurs. Has anybody experienced a similar problem? If
yes, how did you solve it? Which version of the Catalyst drivers would run
the game perfectly?

Thanks in advance,

Glzmo

Try turning off Dynamic Glow. Thsi feature apparantly doesn't work well with
Radeon cards.

I'm getting some odd flashing now and then using the 3.7 Cats with a 9800
Pro. Game runs very smooth besides that.

Hmm. I had Dynamic Glow turned on in the demo, and didn't notice any
glitches (Radeon 8500 OEM, Catalyst 3.4). I'm about to install the full
version <g> and I'll try it both ways.

Perhaps the problem is R3x0 and RV3x0 specific. The major problem with
Dynamic Glow is that it reduce performance by a very significant margin.

I had it too. I could even position the mouse in the 'middle' of one of
these flashes and the whole screen would turn white and stay that way.

I was using the 3.7 driver pack and just installed the 3.2 drivers, problem
solved. Now I have a new one. When you load a game once, everything is
fine. The second time you load a game, it freezes to the point I have to
cycle the power to get it back.

This is depressing.

I've got this problem with a 9700Pro and Cat 3.7, funny thing is I didn't
have it with Cat 3.6!

I'm currently using the Omega drivers and the problem isn't as bad, but is
still there.

Thanks for the many replies. Now I noticed that the box says a 100% OpenGL
1.4 compatible video card is required to run th egame properly. Yet, with
Catalyst 3.7, th OpenGL driver version seems to be 1.3.3920 (at least that's
what it says under 'driver info' in the game). Which Catalyst driver version
incorporates an OpenGL driver version 1.4 or higher?

Thanks again,

Glzmo

None actually, but it shouldn't matter at all.

Correction:

The 3.6 and 3.7 drivers fully support OpenGL 1.4. You can confirm this by
downloading GLviewer: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/. I think the
problems with Dynamic Glow could have something to do with the fact that
Jedi Academy uses Nvidia's GL_NV_point_sprite extensions for certain paricle
effects instead of the default GL_ARB_point_sprite extension.

OK, I played with DG off for about 7 levels last night and everything
seemed fine, with one exception (but this doesn't seem to be
ATI-specific, I've seen others reporting this): the cloaked troops.
When they are in the process of cloaking or decloaking, the game slows
to a crawl unless you look away or hit Force Sense (which
puts a red aura around them).

I'll try with DG on for a while today and see how it goes.

Try e-mail the Omega driver guy, maybe he can fix it for you.

I don't use the Omega "drivers". Don't want to either.

That said, I tried JA with Dynamic Glow on for a while today and didn't
notice any glitches. Slight framerate hit, or at least it seemed like
there was, I didn't have the framerate display turned on (can't remember
which cvar it is and I couldn't be bothered to look it up).

So, 3.4 Catalyst, 8500 OEM card, and no problems (other than reduced
framerate) with Dynamic Glow.

I just got this game, and noticed the same problem. Turning off dynmaic
glow fixes it. I am using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW and its driver v3.8.
