JavaScript Errors

I noticed I was receiving JAVA script errors a few weeks ago on all my
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 machines. Examples of the IE errors are as follows
on a particular web-site:

Line: 83
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
URL: http://www.gsa.gov/Portal/gsa/ep/home.do?tabid=0

and

Line: 1840
Char: 5
Error: Syntax error
Code: 0
URL: http://www.gsa.gov/Portal/gsa/ep/home.do?tabld=0

I have checked my IE option settings with non issue machines and
recommendation from Microsofts websites and have reinstalled WINXP on test
machines and applied all updates and still have the same results. I have
tried different ISP connections (broadband and dial-up) and even noticed it
though less frequently loading Windows2000ProSP3. I have also disabled the
WindowsXP firewall.

Hi,
From IE> Tools> Internet Options> Advanced...
Check "Disable script debugging" and uncheck "Display a notification about
every script error." If the pages display OK, stop at that.

If JavaScript elements appear to be missing from the pages, try a reinstall
of the
scripting engine. Go to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
for the appropriate download of Windows Script 5.6.

Hope this helps,
Don

Still having issues...

If you look at the lower left hand portion of a webpage normally you should
see a IE icon where I show a yellow triange with an exclimation mark
indicating errors. Again I get this while reinstalling Windows XPSP1 and
also Windows 2000 ProSP3 though less frequent.

Of note if I upgrade the Windows2000Pro SP3 machine from its default browser
of IE 5 to IE6 SP1 I receive more frequent errors. Also tried Firefox
without success.

Hi,
You've probably found this article, but:
308260- How to Troubleshoot Script Errors in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=308260
- - - - -
Also, from a post by Mike Burgess:
Verify these Registry entries exist and are correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Disable Script Debugger"="yes"
"Error Dlg Details Pane Open"="yes"
"Error Dlg Displayed On Every Error"="no"
"NoJITSetup"=dword:00000000
"NoWebJITSetup"=dword:00000001

Note: always Export before editing ...

Do you have any third-party programs blocking ads, scripts, scripting,
active content?

I ran into similar problem. I reinstalled XP up to SP1, everything seemed to
work fine. After updating to SP2, IE6 does not work as intended. I noticed
that IE6 was tightly integrated with MSN 7. When MSN 7 is not on, IE 6 runs
in "Compatibility mode". Practically, links on all MSN pages don't work -
"The page cannot be found". I removed MSN 7 running on XP, as it was a
conduit for allowing many Trojans and Spyware to sneak through. Before I
removed it, a total of 78 sneaked in. After removing it, only one slipped
through, but the anti-virus software intercepted it. Microsoft's Antispyware
Beta didn't catch it!

Use View Source. Assuming that open's XP's Notepad make sure
that Word Wrap is off and Status bar is on (Alt-o,W and Alt-V,S).
Then browse down to that line (1840). What do you see ahead of it?

FWIW here is what I have there (starting from line 1836 and including
all of 1840):

<extract>
<script type="text/javascript">
function popWin(msg){

var newWin= window.open("","","height=500,width=600");
var arrMsg = new Array();
</extract>

The function name makes me think of third-party adblockers hacking out
code.

Make sure that you have stopped all such interfering software
to test that they aren't the cause of your symptoms.

Good luck

The problem had to do with a corupted broadband modem firewall configuration
