The advice you've been given for downloading is correct, but if your only
need for Java is a web chatroom app then perhaps you might be interested to
know that you still can get the Microsoft version called a Java Virtual
Machine(JVM). The download will be smaller and at least in my opinion
Internet Explorer will be more stable. Now I should tell you that Microsoft
cannot supply the JVM to you directly because a court ruled that they had
infringed the copyright of Java's developer Sun Microsystem. However
Microsoft still support existing installations of JVM for security fixes and
by agreement with Sun will do so until December 2007, by which time Windows
Vista will be here optomised to support the Sun product. Its your choice but
if you want the Microsoft JVM you can get it here

the instructions. Just an alternative the choice is yours. I should say
there is nothing illegal or dishonest about doing this
