Java Virtual Machine?????

I have a problem when accessing chat rooms. There were no
problems before, but recently something is wrong. When I
enter one, the internet explorer automatically closes by
itself. I used "system restore" to try to fix this, but
nothing. Before the system restore, a message appeared
saying that I needed to download microsof java virtual
machine. When I clicked on "download" it tookk me to the
microsoft page and said something about transitioning
from java to something. Well, basically I couldn't
download anything. Right after system restore, everything
was back to normal and working properly, but now (as I've
mentioned) when I log in to a chatroom, it kicks me out
automatically.

What do I need?
How can I check if I have it?
