I have an icon in the tray which offers a chance to upgrade my Java. Is this
part of windows XP or from a 3rd party? Does XP have it's own Java(?) and if
so how do I get back to it? Do I need it?

Nope. The MS Java Virtual Machine was part of SP1 and had been removed
from SP1a. Since then, Java support is third-party software only.
or from a 3rd party?

That depends. Scan your system for malware since update notifications
may be faked if can't remember installing that particular package.

It's most likely legit, their is a setting in the java update for
notification only.

Go to this link
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
and download "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6" (save the download to
your desktop, before you install it go to add/remove and uninstall all other
java installations
(their may be more than one) then install the download.

Use this link to test the installation

I don't know aht the icon in your System Tray is but...

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 6.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions.
There are numerous vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.

It is highly suggested that you update to the latest version which is Sun Java JRE/JSE
Version 6.0

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0

Thanks, found I had 3 versions installed in control panel. Removed them and
installed vr6. Also made sure /java directory was empty before doing vr6
