Java difficulties!!!!

Hello.....new to this group so please bear w/ me.
I have just recently purchased a new computer that came w/ Windows XP Home Edition operating system. I do a number of things that require Java. However, when I got my computer up and running after bringing it home, I tried to have a little fun one evening and visit a game site that I frequent.....I received an error message stating that I needed Java Virtual Machine to play. It gave me the option of 'Downloading Virtual Machine'...I clicked 'Ok' to begin the download and it just redirected me to Microsoft's homepage with very little information to my issues. I've tried a variety of things. Everything from re-setting information in the Java Plug-In (in control panel) to downloading an earlier version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine. I know that Microsoft no longer supports this. I've gone to Sun and downloaded and installed their version and still NOTHING! I have used up all the patience I have trying to figure out the problem. As I said, I do a variety of things that require Java to run. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone else had this problem since purchasing a new computer w/in the past few weeks?? I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of and visited many websites that give me virtually NO information whatsoever!!! Thanks and I hope to hear something soon!

You may try this. Uninstall Sun JAVA. Go to the site linked below and
download MSVM. Install it and then run Windows Update to get the security
patch from MS.

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.
