japanese text from PC to Mac?

I have an Excel document from a client that has Japanese text in it.
It opens fine on Windows XP with Office, but it does not open on Macs.
I have tried it on Mac OS 9, OS X 10.3, using AppleWorks and Office
X.

I am not familiar with how this works, but it looks like it's a text
encoding issue rather than a font issue. Regardless, our graphic
designers need to use this Japanese text on a QuarkXPress layout, so I
somehow need to get it onto the Macs.

Can someone help me out with this?

Thanks,
joseph

The US versions of MS Office have the capability to display Asian
language characters provided the language module has been installed.
However, that's for the Windows versions. Post this question instead
to a Mac Office group. You should be able to search for such a group
on the MS server at address msnews.microsoft.com.
