Itunes not working

Can anyone help a relative computer novice get to the bottom of a problem I
an experiencing regarding my itunes that will not open.

I have Vista, and up until about 2 weeks ago (when I last opened the
application) my itunes worked fine. However last week I tried to open it,
only to be faced with the following message:

Microsoft visual C++ runtime library

runtime error

This application has requested to terminate it in an unusual way.

Now I am not aware of why this should suddenly stop working, when it has
always worked on the new system. I have tried updating the latest version of
itunes, but to no avail. Can anyone help me as I do not relish the prospest
of loading my entire collection back onto disc.

You might get a resolution if you post to an iTunes forum. Anyway, see if
you can get more info on the error after it happens. Go to Start > Control
Panel > System and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Either
the Application or System log should report the error. In the error log you
should also have a link to Microsoft to search for the error.

Do you have all the latest Windows Updates?

Hi Martin thanks for the reply.

I believe I have all the latest updates. I found a post today on the itunes
site that detailed all the relevant steps One should take in trying to
rectify issues where itunes does not run. After following these steps
(includes 2 vista downloads, the new itunes download as well as one from
quickrime) I am still none the wiser.

Have tried to post on the itunes site, but am not able to as I do not have a
mac and therefore do not have the apple id no that I apparently need.

Not really going to go into what your actual problem is cause this fix works
1st time, every time.

1. copy all your bought tunes somewhere safe.
2. uninstall quick time and all related to itunes. reboot.
3. download [do not web install] quick time from the itunes/QT site to some
folder on your drive.
4. now install it and setup your online account again.

It takes 100 times less to do these 4 steps, than it does to try and figure out
what went wrong. Thousands of things could have gone wrong with no relation to
itunes.
Might be some associations went bad. itunes may no longer be the audio player.
anything could have deleted anything. etc...
5. Check and see that you didn't lose any of your tunes.
