Itunes installation issue

Hi, I am running a new Sony Vaio notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium. I
have been having trouble installing Itunes and other installation files that
come in the .msi format. I am attempting to install the latest version of
Itunes (7.6.1.9) and I get this error message right after I double click on
the setup file, " This installation package could not be opened. Verify that
the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." This same
package installed perfectly on another machine running the same edition of
Windows Vista. It does not bring up the screen asking for Administrative
privileges to run this program. It would be great if someone could help me
out here.

Thanks

Just wanted to mention that you shouldn't be surprised if you
don't get many answers here. iTunes is one of the most horrible,
intrusive, and arrogant pieces of software that ever existed.
Most experienced computer users shun it.

Apart from that, you'd be in the wrong newsgroup. You should ask
in the direction of Apple, not Microsoft.

There is an alternative software around. I don't know the
details, but once you know it exists, you can probably find it.
I hear that it is a quite good substitute for iTunes. Does
anybody have an URL or some experience with it?

Well yeah, I would've been ok with it if the problem was restricted to the
Itunes installer, don't really need it. But other MSI files don't run either,
the netflix player for example. It doesn't really make sense, because these
files work on another machine I have, running the same OS. I have already
tried re-registering the msiexec file and re-installing it, neither solution
works.

Ah, that's something different.

Have you seen this Microsoft Knowledge Base article?

How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175

I've had similar problems once and could solve them by
downloading and installing the latest version of the installer.
