It's me again - network only works with Windows ME

Both my Laptop and Desktop machines are running XP with all the updates
installed.
My network worked fine until a virus attack on both XP machines (kids - AIM).
All viruses have been removed but I'm having some kind of name conflicts and
none the names have been changed. I might have the problem narrowed to Net
Logon, it seems neither will start on the XP machines. I've included my
Browstat on my last post and also tried sending to Chuck's PC Network, but
haven't gotten a reply, so I'm starting this again.
3- PC's, 2 w/ XP and 1 w/ME, all worked fine for approx 3 yrs. Now files
can't be viewed on either XP machine machine (I really just need my printer
on the one XP)
or I'll have to put it on the ME machine.
Thanks for any help.

Jay,

If you have a network, and the observed problems are between two or more
computers, it's generally most useful to provide diagnostic data, like "ipconfig
/all", for both computers. When available, from three computers, it is still
better.

In your case, the log from OLDPC shows a starting point. OLDPC has IPV6, aka
Teredo Tunneling. Please remove that first. If any other computers have that,
please do likewise.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Next, provide "browstat status" from both XP computers, and "ipconfig /all" from
all computers, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Jay,

That's OldPC again - is OldPC the third computer, or the first?

Just to save us a lot of yadda yadda, how about you get all three "ipconfig
/all" logs, and both "browstat status" logs, and post them together. Make sure
you have 5 separate and unique logs.

Sorry, having more trouble. Can't get Browstat to work on the Windows ME
machine and having trouble with my "Copy and Paste" on my laptop. Still
working on it!!!

Jay,

Keep working on the "Copy and Paste" on the laptop. Note that browstat won't
run on Windows ME. I asked for 5 diagnostics, not 6 - "browstat status" from
both XP computers, and "ipconfig /all" from all computers.

OK, Jay!

To start, OLDPC, which both JBYRD-LAPTOP and OLDPC recognise as the master
browser, has IPX. This is a problem, since it appears to be the only computer
of the 3 with it.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Also, please make sure that NEWPC is not running the Browse Master.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

Next, I'm looking at the ipconfig logs. I note that each computer appears to be
on the 172.16/8 subnet, that is, you're using a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. To
be strictly correct, you should be using 255.255.240.0 (172.16/12). I'm not
sure that's relevant to your problem, but it could be a long term problem.
<http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html>
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html

Finally, I gotta be curious. Why are you putting Windows ME on your new
computer? That's like kerosene in the gas tank of a Lambourghini IMHO.

OK, Jay!

browser, has IPX. This is a problem, since it appears to be the only computer
of the 3 with it.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

Next, I'm looking at the ipconfig logs. I note that each computer appears to be
on the 172.16/8 subnet, that is, you're using a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. To
be strictly correct, you should be using 255.255.240.0 (172.16/12). I'm not
sure that's relevant to your problem, but it could be a long term problem.
<http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html>

Finally, I gotta be curious. Why are you putting Windows ME on your new
computer? That's like kerosene in the gas tank of a Lambourghini IMHO.
Oldpc is my newest pc is it has XP, I just didn't change the name when I got
the newer PC. I'm just using the operating systems that came with them.
Im only familiar with their respective IP addresses and seem to be fine.
I've never changed the subnet addresses, should I.

and everything I've seen shows either OLDPC or JBYRD-Laptop as trying to be
the master browser. How do I determine if Newpc is trying to be the master
browser?

OK, Jay!

To start, OLDPC, which both JBYRD-LAPTOP and OLDPC recognise as the master
browser, has IPX. This is a problem, since it appears to be the only computer
of the 3 with it.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

Next, I'm looking at the ipconfig logs. I note that each computer appears to be
on the 172.16/8 subnet, that is, you're using a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. To
be strictly correct, you should be using 255.255.240.0 (172.16/12). I'm not
sure that's relevant to your problem, but it could be a long term problem.
<http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html>

And, I note THIS on OldPC:

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html

A minor detail I forgot to mention is, I'm using wireless for my Laptop
connection and thats the Homeporttal 2wire, all my PC's has the program for
that adapter and that adapter recognizes all three because it is connected to
my hub.

you have 5 separate and unique logs.

Sorry, having more trouble. Can't get Browstat to work on the Windows ME

working on it!!!

Finally, I gotta be curious. Why are you putting Windows ME on your new
computer? That's like kerosene in the gas tank of a Lambourghini IMHO.
Don't believe Newpc is the master browser for 2 reasons;
I've my XP network setup disk to configure my Windows ME machine (newpc)
and everything I've seen shows either OLDPC or JBYRD-Laptop as trying to be
the master browser. How do I determine if Newpc is trying to be the master
browser?

You can't. You can't run browstat on NewPC. What we know is simply that
JBYRD-LAPTOP and OldPC have elected OldPC. Election criteria are a lot of fun
to follow, and with Windows NT (NT / 2000 / 2003 / XP) they're complicated
enough. Since Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) doesn't know anything about Windows NT,
it doesn't follow the same rules, so we have no way of knowing what NewPC has
elected. But I've seen enough segmented workgroups involving Windows 9x. Read
the articles please:

you have 5 separate and unique logs.

Sorry, having more trouble. Can't get Browstat to work on the Windows ME
machine and having trouble with my "Copy and Paste" on my laptop. Still
working on it!!!
OK this is from my Laptop:

It's a good thing I can tap into my Windows ME machine, thats how I was able
to transfer all these notes into one.
Thanks

OK, Jay!

To start, OLDPC, which both JBYRD-LAPTOP and OLDPC recognise as the master
browser, has IPX. This is a problem, since it appears to be the only computer
of the 3 with it.

And, I note THIS on OldPC:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : homeportal.2wire.net
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter

Finally, I gotta be curious. Why are you putting Windows ME on your new
computer? That's like kerosene in the gas tank of a Lambourghini IMHO.
Don't believe Newpc is the master browser for 2 reasons;

Election criteria are a lot of fun
to follow, and with Windows NT (NT / 2000 / 2003 / XP) they're complicated
enough. Since Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) doesn't know anything about Windows NT,
Thanks Chuck, I'll do some more reading and checking into this NVIDIA
adapter and I'll let you know tomorrow cause I got to go. Thanks again for
your help and patience.
