Item cannot be displayed in the reading pane

Hi all. In Outlook 2007 I have 2 problems I hope someone can help me solve.
On all return-receipt e-mails I've gotten in approx the past 45 days, in the
preview window (reading pane) a message is displayed stating "this item
cannot be displayed in the reading pane. Open the item to read its
contents." However, when I try to open the message, I get a "cannot open
this item" error. If I try to delete the message, then I get this error:
"The move, copy or deletion cannot be completed. The items might have been
moved or deleted, or you may not have sufficient permission. If the item
was sent as a task request or meeting request, the sender might not receive
updates."

The second problem (which began at exactly the same time as problem #1)
concerns a ton of previously received e-mails I have stored in various
folders which have mysteriously become unreadable. When I click any of
these messages the header information (sender, recipient, subject and
date/time the message was sent/received) is displayed but the Reading Pane
is completely blank. If I open the message the same thing happens -- I can
view all the information in the header but the message itself is blank. The
curious thing is if I view the PST file (which is 1.54 gig) on another
computer, I can view all the messages with no problem. But of course the PC
with the problem is my primary PC (laptop) and I really need to be able to
view the e-mails on this one. I've uninstalled/reinstalled Outlook 2007 and
run ScanPST (and chosen the option to fix errors) but the problems persist.

Is anyone familiar with these problems/know how to fix? Thanks much.

Did you install any applications or updates about the time the problem
started? Are you using google desktop search?

I do not have Google desktop search installed. I did an [HP] factory
restore recently (after a persistent Trojan infection) and after
reinstalling all my applications (plus Windows/Office updates), Office 2007
first among them but, come to think of it, the problems described below
pre-dated the restore. I just ran Office diagnostics and all the tests were
successful in that no errors were found. I wish I could find out how to fix
these maddening problems! Thanks for your response.
