It CANNOT be done ?

Folks:

INTRODUCTION
I have a minor hardware problem. All the vendors are saying that this
CANNOT be done.
I have two computers: (i) LapTop (ii) Tower model PC.

REQUIREMENT
I would like to be able to use some type of CABLE to connect my LapTop
DIRECTLY to the PC.
Since the PC does not have its own monitor, I want to do some DNS and Active
Directory configuration on the PC from time to time.

EXCLUSION
I do not want to network (switch/hub, RJ-45 Cables) the LapTop & PC.

QUESTION
Can this type of connection be done. If so, specifically, how ?

Thanks,
John.

Symantec's PCanywhere. It will even include the necessary cable.

(But using an Ethernet card and a crossover RJ-45 would be so much easier,
less expensive, and faster throughput.)

To have a look at the different ways of doing it look up remote access for
pcs and that should give you some ideas of how you can do it and what would
be needed for it to be done.

Thanks,
John.

it's a dumb idea. laptop screens aren't VGA, and if you knew how to write
device drivers i don't think you would be asking the question. just network
it and use vnc, remote desktop or similar or go buy a flat panel.
you are wasting your time here.

Duh, does anyone know about a crossover cable out there?
It will have an RJ-45 end but it it's about the most direct method I can
think of to connect two computers without third party software.

The OP doesn't want to network, for some obscure reason.

Then spend $10 and get an old 14in monitor and 1 meg video card for it..

I seem to recall that you can do a direct connect with a serial or
parallel cable. You got the ports?

Yes it can be done. Go to www.realvnc.com for a free solution. BUT
You're shooting yourself in the foot by using a serial link cable
instead of networking. It'll be piss poor.

Data throughput'll be so slow it'll be horrific waiting for the screen
updates.

serial cable(null modem) and DCC (direct cable connection)windows of course
Ever tried a remote desktop connection on a 115k connection? It's not
clever on 10MB let alone 115k.

Kind of like adding "there is no mouse" to the PC's list of problems,
almost.
