Issues with SP2 and P2P connectivity

Hi

I used to have a P2P conection (peer to peer) between 2 PCs with WinXP Sp1
installed. I just connected then with my crossover cable and, voila!, my
home network was set. Now I decided to commit my worst mistake: I installed
SP2. Now the only thing I get is the following message:

"Local Area Connection This connection has limited or no connectivity.
You might not be able to access the Internet or home network resources"...
blah, blah, blah.

Does anybody have an idea of how to solve this problem?
Any help will be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Carlos Antonio

If using WinXP SP2, make sure that you've either disabled the built-in
firewall, or set the firewall to allow file and print sharing.

After I installed SP2 on one of my machines, I kept getting that message.
File and print sharing enabled. All networking stuff was working great, but
I was still getting that message. If I looked at Network Connections, I saw
the same "limited or no connectivity" status.
Because the network was functioning fine, and tiring of the error message, I
checked the box saying "don't show this message anymore" or something like
that. For a little while, Network Connections showed the same bad status.
But, dang, not too much later, Network Connections got the hint, too.

Steven I have seen the same thing happen on 2 machines of mine.
Can someone explain this?

Hi Carlos,

That just means that there is no DHCP on your network (between your two machines that you are trying
to connect) and hence Windows Automatic Private IP addressing assigns both the machines an IP of
169.254.XXX.XXX range. I have seen from personal experience that if you disable the windows
firewall, file transfers face no problems in this kind of scenario.

Run the network setup wizaed and disable any firewall you are using until
you fix the connection. Also check your IP and subnet settings on the SP2
computer network connection. See if they are compatable with your other
system.
