issues with Gigabit NICs and Switches

Has anyone heard if issues with upgrading their existing LAN with Gigabit
NICs and Switches (or know where I can research it)?
I have feedback from Users of intermittently getting reports having [a]
missing or wrong character:
* not really garbled as in more than 1 wrong or missing character.
* no "extra stuff" - none

Since it is so intermittent (a few times a week max from multiplied dozens
of reports) it is difficult to pin down.
There's a database on the LAN that from which Users run reports.

My guess is the whatever cable is run is not [quite up to par] or [run
correctly] and I need a little more than a hunch to warrant suggesting that
they re-run the cable better quality (like CAT6) or re-dress the cables.
I think the existing cables are Cat5 or Cat5e.

The proverbial needle in a hay stack?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Tracey

You cables need to be CAT5e or greater to effectively run gig. A cable
tester can tell you pretty quick.
